The short answer
Most walkways cost $25–$35 per square foot
For a standard paver walkway, pricing typically runs about $25–$35 per square foot, installed. That includes excavation, a compacted base, pavers, edge restraint and professional installation.
Steps, landings and natural stone like bluestone add to the total because they take more material and labor. The only way to get an exact number is a free on-site estimate.
Typical price ranges by walkway size
| Walkway size (width × length) | Square feet | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| 3′ × 20′ garden path | 60 sq ft | $1,500 – $2,100 |
| 4′ × 25′ front walk | 100 sq ft | $2,500 – $3,500 |
| 4′ × 40′ front walk | 160 sq ft | $4,000 – $5,600 |
| 5′ × 50′ entry walk | 250 sq ft | $6,250 – $8,750 |
What affects the price
Why two walkways of the same size can cost differently
Width and length
Longer walks cost more overall but often less per square foot. Wider walks feel more welcoming and take more material.
Curves and borders
Curved paths and contrasting borders take more cutting and labor than a straight run with no border.
Paver or natural stone
Standard pavers cost less than premium lines or natural stone like bluestone.
Steps and landings
Front walks often need steps or a landing at the door, which add material and labor.
Removing an old walk
Tearing out an old concrete or brick walkway and hauling it away adds to the price.
Slope and access
Walks on a slope may need steps or extra base work, and tight access adds time.
What you’re paying for
What a properly built walkway includes
A walkway that stays flat for decades is mostly about what is underneath. A properly built paver walkway includes:
- Excavation to the right depth for your soil
- A compacted gravel base, built up in layers
- A level bedding layer for the pavers
- Edge restraint so the walkway holds its shape
- Joint sand to lock the pavers together
Be wary of quotes that are far lower than others. The savings usually come from a thinner base, and that shows up as sinking or loose pavers a few winters later.
Questions
Walkway cost FAQs
How much does a paver walkway cost in Connecticut?
Most paver walkways we build run about $25–$35 per square foot, installed. A 4-foot-wide, 25-foot-long front walk (100 square feet) typically lands between $2,500 and $3,500, before any steps or landings.
How wide should a front walkway be?
Many homeowners choose about 4 to 5 feet for a front walk so two people can walk side by side, and about 3 feet for garden paths. We will suggest a width that fits your entry during the estimate.
Are pavers better than concrete for a walkway?
Pavers cost more up front, but they handle freeze-thaw cycles well and individual pavers can be lifted and reset if needed, so repairs do not mean tearing out the whole walk.
Can you replace my old concrete walkway?
Yes. We remove the old walkway, haul it away and build the new one on a proper base.
Do you build steps and landings too?
Yes. We build paver and bluestone steps, landings and stone veneer risers, often as part of the same project as the walkway.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Every walkway we build is backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty, and AQ Masonry LLC is fully insured.
